AIPC has established a dedicated sustainability working group comprising eight sustainability officers from around the world. This group provides a platform for networking, supports AIPC’s commitment to the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative, and facilitates the exchange of best practices. Meeting every six weeks, the group works collaboratively to drive sustainable innovation within the industry.

One key initiative is the creation of a library of sustainability case studies, regularly featured in the AIPC monthly newsletter and accessible via the AIPC Intranet.

This month, we spotlight the Pennsylvania Convention Center’s Post-Event Waste Reduction Program.
The ASM Global-managed venue has taken meaningful strides to reduce post-event landfill tonnage and divert over 50% of waste through coordinated donation and recycling efforts. The PACC Team works directly with community organizations serving underrepresented groups, building a robust database to match donations from events with local needs.

Internal training has also played a critical role, educating staff and contractors on sustainable practices, particularly around the construction and teardown of event setups. By engaging event organizers and continuously managing waste streams, the Center has established a model of responsible event operations.

The results are compelling: 239 tons of waste recycled, a 52% waste diversion rate, and support extended to seven community organizations. What began as a donation initiative has evolved into a broader effort, including volunteerism and lasting partnerships. For its continued commitment to sustainability, the PACC has earned the Events Industry Council’s Sustainable Event Standards Gold Level Certification for two consecutive years.
