Inspiring Ideas That Change the World: EICC’s Holistic Approach to Sustainability
AIPC has established a dedicated sustainability working group comprising eight sustainability officers from around the world. This group provides a platform for networking, supports AIPC’s commitment to the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative, and facilitates the exchange of best practices. Meeting every six weeks, the group works collaboratively to drive sustainable innovation within the industry.
One key initiative is the creation of a library of sustainability case studies, regularly featured in the AIPC monthly newsletter and accessible via the AIPC Intranet.
This month, we spotlight the Edinburgh International Conference Centre’s Holistic Approach to Sustainability.
The EICC is setting new standards in sustainable conferencing, showing that environmental responsibility, economic growth, and social impact can thrive together. Since opening in 1995, the EICC has been guided by a vision to inspire ideas that change the world, embedding a triple-bottom-line approach into its operations. As a signatory to the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge, it aims for net zero emissions by 2030 and has already achieved a 60% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2013.
Its award-winning Step Change programme drives progress across energy, waste, and community engagement. The venue sources 100% renewable electricity, diverts all waste from landfill, and redistributes surplus food, providing over 700 meals in 2024. Clients benefit from bespoke Event Impact Reports and toolkits that encourage low-carbon travel and inclusive practices.
The results are compelling: full landfill diversion, deep emissions cuts, and lasting community partnerships. EICC exemplifies how events can accelerate climate action while creating social value.
