AIPC Staff Exchange Programme: Strengthening Connections from Within

As the global convention centre industry continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: the value of learning from one another.

Beyond formal training programmes and conferences, real insight often comes from direct, hands-on experience. This is precisely the ambition behind the AIPC Staff Exchange Programme, a practical initiative designed to strengthen connections between members, deepen mutual understanding, and foster long-term collaboration across centres.

AIPC has long been committed to supporting professional development through its Academy, webinars, and regional forums. However, one recurring observation stands out: some of the most impactful learning moments happen informally through conversations, shared challenges, and exposure to different operational realities. The Staff Exchange Programme builds on this by creating a framework that enables centres to connect directly and organise exchanges independently.

The concept is simple but powerful. Participating centres identify areas of interest: whether in operations, sustainability, technology, customer experience, or sales  and match with another centre willing to host an exchange. From there, both parties define the scope: profile of the staff member, duration (typically around six weeks), objectives, and expected outcomes. A formal agreement ensures clarity, while keeping the process flexible and member-driven.

The benefits are immediate and tangible. Staff gain exposure to new working environments, discover alternative approaches, and develop new skills that can be applied back home. Centres, in turn, benefit from fresh perspectives and benchmarking opportunities. In some cases, these exchanges can even open the door to business collaboration, particularly for international events that rotate across regions.

A pilot example between Calgary Stampede (Canada) and SwissTech Convention Center (Switzerland) illustrates the depth of such exchanges. Over several weeks, participants explored topics ranging from talent development and operations to marketing, sustainability, and event programming. The outcome was not only individual learning, but also a comprehensive comparative analysis of both centres’ structures, strategies, and performance indicators .

Importantly, AIPC’s role is not to manage the operational complexity of each exchange, but to act as a facilitator connecting interested centres and providing a simple framework to get started. This approach ensures scalability while encouraging ownership and initiative from members themselves.

Looking ahead, the ambition goes further. Beyond individual exchanges, the programme aims to create a mindset shift within the AIPC community where centres proactively think: “It would be valuable for someone from another centre to visit us and explore what we could do together.”

In that sense, the Staff Exchange Programme is not just a development tool, but a catalyst for deeper collaboration across the network.

A follow-up discussion is planned during the AIPC Annual Conference in Bilbao, where members will be invited to share interest, experiences, and ideas to further shape the initiative.

Because ultimately, innovation and excellence do not happen in isolation: they grow through connection.
