Currency and payment methods

The official currency in China is the Yuan (CNY), also known as Renminbi. For current exchange rates, please consult your bank or a currency exchange service.

Cash Payments
Due to the widespread digitalization of payments, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, cash payments are not always welcomed and may even be refused in some instances. When using cash, try to have the exact amount, as change is often unavailable, particularly in taxis.

Card Payments
Credit card usage is limited to certain international hotels and major shopping centers. In large cities, ATMs are widely available and accept bank and credit cards (e.g., Maestro, Visa, MasterCard, American Express). Ensure you contact your bank before traveling to authorize withdrawals abroad.

Online Payment Systems
Electronic payment systems such as Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used in China, and in some cases, alternative payment methods may not be accepted. It is now possible to link foreign credit cards to Alipay or WeChat Pay. A guide from the Chinese authorities is available to assist with this process.

While electronic payments are prevalent, it is still advisable to carry some cash in case of issues with digital payment systems. You may get cash from the Currency Exchange within the International Arrivals of the airport.

Weather in Shenzhen (June 2025)
